To measure the strength of magnets, we use a gaussmeter, similar to how we use rulers to measure length. These tools typically consist of a sensor placed close to the measured magnetic field. The sensor contains a Hall effect sensor that detects changes in the magnetic field and produces an electrical signal proportional to the field strength.


After detecting the electrical signal, it is processed and displayed on a digital or analogue readout. This display will show the strength of the magnetic field in either Tesla or gauss units.


How To Use Your Gaussmeter

As mentioned, magnetic fields that are too strong pose a health risk to humans and animals. This is why gauss meters have become an indispensable tool, but how can you use them correctly? Here are a few steps:


1. Turn on the gaussmeter

Most gauss meters have an on/off switch or button. Press the button to turn on the device and wait for it to power up completely before proceeding.


2. Zero the gaussmeter

This step will remove any background magnetic field readings so that you can obtain an accurate measurement. Refer to the instructions in your manual for how to zero your specific gaussmeter.


3. Position the sensor

Hold the sensor of the gaussmeter near the magnet you want to measure, ensuring that it is perpendicular to the magnetic field being measured.


4. Take the measurement 

Slowly move the sensor towards the magnet, keeping it perpendicular to the magnetic field. Take note of the reading on the gaussmeter display. 


5. Turn off the gaussmeter

When you're finished taking measurements, turn off the gaussmeter and store it in a safe, dry place.


Factors to Consider When Choosing a Gauss Meter

Based on the above on how to use it, there are three key factors to consider when choosing a gaussmeter for your own usage:


Accuracy

One of the most critical factors to consider when choosing a gaussmeter is its accuracy. The accuracy of a gaussmeter is typically defined by the percentage error it produces when compared to a calibrated reference standard. When selecting a gaussmeter, look for one with a low percentage error to ensure that your measurements are as accurate as possible.


Sensitivity

The sensitivity of a gaussmeter determines its ability to detect magnetic fields. The higher the sensitivity, the better the gaussmeter can detect weaker magnetic fields. However, higher sensitivity often comes at the cost of a smaller measurement range. 


Range

The range of a gaussmeter determines the maximum and minimum magnetic field strengths it can measure. Depending on your application, you may need a gaussmeter with a broad measurement range or one that is specialised for specific field strengths. Be sure to choose a gaussmeter that can measure the magnetic field strengths you need accurately.
